2011 was a tough year for everyone, so I didn’t feel like making a typical New Year’s party card. Instead I came up with this quiet, introspective one.
I hope 2012 is a good year for everyone.
Cartoons for a special birthday
This year’s birthday is a big one for Lisa. Since her birthday falls between Christmas and New Year, many friends are out of town and can’t wish her well in person. I sent out a cartoon plea to friends and family to attend our “virtual birthday party” and send her birthday wishes by email, mail or phone.
The top figure is a detail, the second figure is the entire announcement.
The third figure is a single panel cartoon inspired by, and quoting exactly, something Lisa said recently about getting older.
We all get older, and its hard to say much about it that doesn’t sound trite. But a good friend always wants to make you feel better. That’s what the third card, bottom figure, is about.
This story is completely true. Well, mostly true. OK, to be honest, Lisa has been very busy. The rest just came to me while I doodled around, looking for an idea. I sketched a Christmas tree that reminded me of an elf’s hat, and from there I was off.
I needed 2 pages to tell this story. Each page is a separate image. Below the cat-meets-elf detail are the first page in the middle and the second page on the bottom.
I discovered that its fun to draw elves’ hats, shoes, and fezzes.
